Learning Objectives

During this workshop, with practical applications and discussion we will discuss:

  • Roles and responsibilities of boards
  • Contributing to organizational culture
  • The role of committees
  • Assessing tasks and time commitment
  • What to expect in an orientation manual
  • Addressing risk

Who Should Attend

  • Board members and anyone thinking of joining a Board
  • Past members of a Board of Directors and who want to explore the experience in a structured way.
  • NPO staff, for example, Volunteer Resource Managers or EDs, who recruit Board members

Facilitator

Tim Howe, B.Sc., M.Sc., MPA, MBA

Tim is a Senior Manager with over 30 years of leadership experience in the health care, not-for-profit sectors having held senior roles with the Ottawa Hospital Department of Anesthesiology, Canadian Medical Association and Canadian Blood Services.

He has expertise in governance, risk management, business continuity and disaster planning, strategic & operational planning, project management and advocacy.  He also has extensive experience having served on many community volunteer Boards with Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre, Bruyère Continuing Care, Personal Choice Independent Living.

Throughout his career Tim has assisted organizations to translate their vision and mission into frontline strategy to meet organizational targets. His expertise in change management, process improvement and project management has proven invaluable to the organizations he has worked with. He truly understands the importance if good governance and its role in the success of organizations.

As the National Coach and Coordinator of Canada’s Wheelchair Tennis team, Tim coached Canada’s first ever entry in the Paralympic Games held in Barcelona Spain in 1992.

The following workshop registrations are non-refundable: (a) purchased at a discounted rate, (b) purchased using a voucher, or (c) cancellation received less than five (5) business days prior to the event. Any other cancellation is refundable, subject to a $10.00 administration fee.
