Your first day as a new member of a board of directors can feel a bit intimidating; like the first day of a new job! But board volunteering can also be an exciting new opportunity to put skills and experiences to work in a cause you care about. This session aims at setting up new board volunteers for success by reviewing key concepts and frameworks that will accompany board members throughout their time as not-for-profit and charitable directors
Who should attend?
- Volunteers, especially if you are looking at applying for board leadership positions.
- New board volunteers who want to gain an introductory overview of their roles.
- Experienced board volunteers who want to refresh some key concepts about board leadership.

This workshop will be hosted live online over the Zoom platform.

What you will learn
By attending this session you will
- Acquire an introductory knowledge of what to expect and ask in a board onboarding process.
- Be exposed to the different roles that directors can have as officers of the board.
- Gain a baseline knowledge of the role and areas of activity of boards in not-for-profit governance and of not-for-profit governance models.
About this session’s facilitator
Ruth Millard holds a BBA in Accounting from Lakehead University and Certificates in Volunteer Management, Program Evaluation, and Senior Non-Profit Leadership, and holds the international Certification in Volunteer Administration. She completed the Trainer III Coaching and Adult Development Training Program from Scouts Canada. Ruth is currently the Executive Business Lead for Board Relations and Governance with Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada. Among other board roles, she served as president of the board of Volunteer Management Professionals of Canada between 2020 and 2022.
