Description:

This World Alzheimer’s Day, The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County is in need of volunteers to help make our annual Walk for Dementia event a success. Our goal? To raise awareness, support families affected by dementia, and strengthen our community bonds- all while having a great time.

Why Volunteer?

This isn’t just any walk; it’s a chance to be part of something bigger, having huge impact on the lives of over 24,000 people in the Ottawa and Renfrew County region living with dementia, contributing to a cause that truly matters. Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or new to the scene, we promise a day filled with excitement, gratitude, and plenty of good vibes.

Ways You Can Contribute:

• Event Setup: Channel your inner event planner and help set up everything from the stage to the start-finish line.
• Photography Support: Support our photographer in capturing the day’s highlights.
• Volunteer Station and Lost and Found: Check in volunteers, track lost items, and be the friendly face everyone needs to see.
• Parking Greeter: Welcome everyone to the event with enthusiasm, manage parking like a pro, and handle VIPs and media inquiries.
• Barrier Station: Keep the event on track by managing traffic, guiding participants to parking with a friendly wave, and providing clear route info.
• Tribute Zone: Make the Tribute Zone the highlight of the event by assisting people with their wall décor with a smile.
• Start/Finish Line & Route Guides: Cheer on participants like they’re running a marathon (even if they’re just walking). Guide them along the route and direct them to post-Walk festivities.
• Walk Hype: Show your spirit at the cheering stations, proudly display your signage, and keep the energy high.
• Interactive Activities Zone: Set up and lead fun activities with the younger crowd, engage with participants, and help ensure safety.
• Programming Stations: Oversee stations, engage with participants, and ensure everyone has a great time.
• Event Teardown: Wrap up the event by cleaning up and tidying the area. It’s the final step in a day filled with joy and accomplishment!

Qualifications and Skills:

• Enthusiasm for community events and a passion for promoting dementia awareness and support.
• Friendly and approachable demeanor with excellent communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as a part of a team.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and roles throughout the event.
• Physical capability to stand, walk, occasionally lift light objects.
