Baking Program Volunteer
Description
The Glebe Centre’s Baking Programs offer the opportunity for social engagement and can provide connections to the past to encourage meaningful memories. It provides Residents opportunity to practice everyday skills such as measuring, pouring, and stirring as well as following step by step instructions. For those who may not be able to physical be involved in baking it provides sensory stimulation (sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing) for all involved. Volunteers in the Baking Program support the Program Facilitator to encourage meaningful participation from all residents and to increase the reminiscing conversation during the baking program.
Position Responsibilities
• Sign into building via digital kiosk and arrive promptly for all shifts.
• Check in with Program Facilitator upon arrival to receive direction for the baking program including recipe and residents that will be attending.
• Support to gather residents from around the home area with direction from the assigned Program Facilitator. While gathering assigned residents the volunteer will ensure to look in the resident room (knocking before entering), in the dining room, tv lounge and speak with staff as needed to locate residents.
•Engage in meaningful conversations with the residents during escorting to and from the program space.
•Offer residents the choice in program, when possible, of where they would like to sit. Program Facilitator will provide direction if resident needs to be sat in specific location.
•Support Program Facilitator with tasks as required during the baking program. This may include but is not limited to handing out supplies, gathering supplies, rearranging furniture to original location and clean up.
•Escort assigned residents back to desired location on home area following completion of program or if the resident desires prior to the end of the program.
Position Time
Position 1: Weekly Monday afternoons 1pm-3:30pm
Position 2: Weekly Wednesday afternoons 1pm-3:30pm
Position 3: Biweekly Saturday mornings 9:30-11:30am
Position 4: Biweekly Thursday afternoons 1pm-3:30pm
*Biweekly opportunities may have opportunity to become weekly if individual’s skills are assessed to meet the requirements
Position Requirements
• Proficiency in English
• Prior experience supporting older adults and/or those living with physical or cognitive decline.
• Valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check
•Onboarding training
•Tuberculosis Screening, testing if screening indicates need to be done at volunteer’s cost.

Volunteer involvement in our baking programs increase the number of residents that are able to successfully participate in the programs. This allows us to ensure that those who need additional support to be successful and engaged throughout the program.

Please note that we have no on site parking. There is street parking available in the neighborhood at no cost. Volunteers are encouraged to utilize OC transpo routes 6 and 7 or active transportation.
Pay per use parking is available in the neighborhood but is the responsibility of the volunteer to pay for if they would like to utilize this option.
