Description
Kids on the Block, an organization that puts on puppet shows about kids with challenges like cerebral palsy, autism etc. in elementary schools, mostly in Ottawa, needs new board members, specifically, a chairperson, a fundraiser, and a person to be in charge of marketing. You must have a computer or smart phone because our monthly meetings are now online, and our communications with each other are by email.
How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
Volunteering with KOTB will be a fun opportunity to interact with a group of friendly people with
the important mission of creating empathy among school-age children. If you have experience as a Chairperson, you will be able to expand the organization and raise our profile in the community. If you have experience in
fundraising or marketing, you will be able to exercise those skills, and gain even more experience.
How will the organization benefit?
The organization will benefit by having its profile raised, and hopefully being able to offer free performances to schools in need. Teachers often book our show when they know they are getting a new student with a specific difference or disability that we cover. It helps to ease the new student into the classroom social circles. Teachers like the opportunity to talk about differences and disabilities, especially on the topic of bullying, a very high interest topic. Our performance also inspires the children to talk about difficulties in school and what they could do about them. We have had many letters telling us of their own creation of puppets and scripts. We also leave them resources for talking and learning about disabilities and differences for two weeks. We like to focus on the grade 3 and 4 level.
Volunteer location:
This is a job that you can do from home. We meet once a month on Google Groups from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month.
