Harmony House is recruiting for a board member with skills and experience including:
– Formal training as a lawyer, with at least 5 years in practice.
– Familiarity with the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act is an asset.
– Familiarity with board governance of not-for-profit charities, Employment law is preferred.
– Previous board experience an asset.

Expectations:
This board member will not be providing any legal advice on a paid or pro-bono basis.
The primary responsibility of this position is to:
– Help shape the organisation’s strategic direction and implementation.
– Assist with drafting and reviewing legal documents, including contracts, policies, and bylaws, terms of reference etc.
– Assist with any legal disputes or litigation involving the organization.
– Assist with negotiations with third parties, employee union engagements etc.
– Contribute ideas and facilitate discussions to enhance the mandate of the organization.
– Ensure the organization meets all fiscal and governance responsibilities and assist the Executive Director and board to work through issues and identify any potential risks, in particular through the lens of a legal professional.
In addition to this, it is expected that this board member will:
– Believe in Harmony House’s vision, mission, and values.
– Actively participate in board meetings and occasionally on committees or ad hoc working groups.
– Attend Harmony House events as possible.
– Read materials provided prior to meetings.
– Attend up to 10 board meetings, and an AGM, yearly
It is anticipated that this will be a time commitment of 4 to 6 hours per month.
