Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) – Tax Preparer
Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) volunteers can take on many different roles. Whether you prepare tax returns or provide support, you will be helping people who are unable to do their taxes on their own.
Participating organizations can choose to host in-person, virtual tax clinics or both. Volunteers at virtual clinics may complete taxes by videoconference, by phone, or through a drop-off clinic. Although it’s helpful, you don’t need experience doing tax returns to volunteer. All volunteers are offered web-based training on how to do taxes, using tax software, and determining their responsibilities. Online training can be supplemented with in-person training or virtual training sessions.
Throughout the year , many people require assistance with tax filing, yet volunteers are particularly busy during tax season, from late February to early May. Volunteer registration is available year-round, but we recommend you register/renew starting the fourth week of October to be ready for the upcoming tax season. Register early to prevent delays and ensure you don’t miss important information.
As a volunteer tax preparer, you will complete taxes for people with a modest
income and a simple tax situation. Organizations offer in-person and/or virtual tax clinics so you may have the opportunity to volunteer at either.
You can file returns electronically using EFILE and CVITP tax preparation software, or on paper. If you file electronically, you can also choose to use the CRA’s Auto-fill my return service.
The CRA offers training and support, but if you are filing returns electronically, you should be comfortable using a computer and have a basic understanding of how to do taxes.
How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is always looking for volunteers and it is a great opportunity to help people in your community! We support adults 65 years and older, housing-insecure individuals, Indigenous Peoples, modest-income individuals, newcomers to Canada, persons with disabilities, and youth. We work with organizations like not-for-profits, shelters, retirement homes, friendship
centres, immigration associations, and schools. Organizations are often looking for volunteers to fill different roles and can help find the right fit for you.
How will the organization benefit?
CVITP tax preparation services are offered free of charge to everyone who meets the eligibility criteria, and includes completing taxes for current and previous years. Individuals need to do their taxes every year to qualify for many federal, provincial, and municipal programs and services. This is a difficult and sometimes overwhelming task for many people in need. Each year through the CVITP, organizations and volunteers help hundreds of thousands of people file their income tax and benefit returns and receive the benefits and credits they are entitled to.
