Location: Various Locations in Ottawa
Program Description:

The Dementia Awareness Outreach volunteer role supports the mission of The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County (DSORC) to help people in our communities impacted by dementia.

Volunteers supporting this role raise awareness to the public by leading the standard presentations/booths at various locations across our region. Volunteers supporting this role also provide information regarding donations and volunteer opportunities to community members to support the organization.

General knowledge about Aging, Cognition, Dementia, and the Dementia Society program and services are preferred.

This opportunity is ideal for those who are interested in public speaking and community leadership. Healthcare professionals, PhD and Master Candidates, healthcare students and experienced caregivers are invited to apply.

Primary Role and Responsibilities:

• Work closely with Education Coordinator to coordinate scheduling and logistical needs in advance of the event
• Complete training, mentorship and review of presentation materials
• Pick up and return presentation supplies
• Pick up and return AV equipment when required
• Travel to presentation/booth venues in Renfrew County areas
• Deliver presentations, answer questions as able, and share information about Dementia, Dementia Society programs and services

Qualifications and Skills:

• Has a vehicle, and is willing and able to conduct tasks around the Renfrew County area
• Proficiency in English and/or French (bilingual an asset)
• Public speaking experience, with demonstrated presentation and communications skills
• General knowledge about aging, cognition, dementia, the Dementia Society programs and services
*Training will be provided, however a pre-existing knowledge is preferred
• Ability to effectively integrate learning objectives into presentation
• Ability to research and prepare for presentations
• Group management skills including active listening skills, respect for diversity in the public, cultural awareness, and sensitivity
• Ability to take initiative or to take direction depending on needs of the position
• Ability to assist with the delivery and setup/teardown of booth and related materials as necessary
• Professionalism, reliability, and punctuality

Screening:

Successful applicants will submit a volunteer application form and provide a valid Ottawa Police Record check. An interview and reference checks will be conducted as part of the application process with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Successful applicants will be provided with Orientation Training in addition to role-specific training from their supervisor.
