As an Ability First Ottawa Board Member, you will be expected to provide leadership, guidance and governance to this charity organization. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and direction of the charity and help it achieve the stated mission of “assisting persons with disabilities, and their families, reach their social, educational and employment goals, by offering resource infrastructure and skills development in coordination with our supporting community.”

You will work collaboratively with other Board Members and will be responsible for making strategic decisions that shape the future of the charity.

Key Responsibilities:
• Provide strategic direction and oversight to ensure the charity’s mission is fulfilled.
• Attend and actively participate in Board Meetings, Annual General Meetings and other related events (ie. Fundraising Events). Board Meetings are held once a month and are generally 2 hours long (there are no meetings in July and December).
• Dedicate approximately 1+ hours a week to the Charity (or a total of 6+ a month).
• Review and approve financial statements, budgets and other financial documents (at Board and AGM Meetings).
• Evaluate and monitor the performance of the charity and its board members and ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
• Represent the organization and act in the best interests of the charity at all times.
• Help to create and maintain relationships with donors, supporters and other stakeholders.
• Participate in fundraising efforts and advocate for the charity’s mission.
• Adhere to the Responsibilities of the Role/Committee assigned to you. If you have a subcommittee to assist, you will be asked to recruit members and set up the subcommittee.
• Understand that if you miss (3) three board meetings in a row, you could be automatically be removed from the Board of Directors.

All Board Members must sign a Confidentiality Agreement, receive a good Police Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector and sign this document prior to their first meeting.
