Distribution Facility Volunteer - Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association
The Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA) requires volunteers to assist with operations at their used book Distribution Facility, located at the James Bartleman Archives and Library Materials Centre in Nepean. Distribution Facility volunteers will be responsible for moving and arranging boxes/carts of books (up to 30lbs), sorting, scanning, packing, and shelving books, preparing boxes of books for shipment, accepting donations of books, answering telephone calls, assisting members of the public, and handling sales.
Our newly established e-commerce brand Kind Reads operates out of our distribution facility as well. You will help scan books for online sales, do a quality check on books set aside for online sales, and fulfill orders placed through our Shopify store. You will support the overall operations for our e-commerce brand and additional tasks may also be required as needed.

How will the organization benefit?
Through the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, we're able to donate more than $350,000 annually to Ottawa’s public library system. FOPLA is over 99% volunteer-run by people who believe in the value of a strong public library in our community. Because of our dedicated volunteers, FOPLA now manages five bookstores, more than 20 self-serve book shelves, a central Distribution Facility, specialty sales, and we have recently launched our new e-commerce initiative – Kind Reads. FOPLA has also provided $85,000 in library sciences scholarships and bursaries to the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College, with the goal of inspiring the next generation of library advocates.
