Description
ELIGIBILITY: APPLICANTS MUST BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OLD AND A MÉTIS CITIZEN; CITIZENSHIP VERIFICATION BY THE MÉTIS NATION OF ONTARIO (MNO) REGISTRY WILL BE REQUESTED UPON ONBOARDING.
PROGRAM BACKGROUND:
The Métis Nation of Ontario’s (MNO) Métis Community Diversion Program promotes restorative justice approaches to justice for Métis communities. It offers a culturally responsive alternative to the traditional criminal justice system, focusing on repairing harm and addressing the underlying causes of criminal behavior. The program empowers individuals involved in the criminal justice system, connects them to culturally-relevant services, encourages open dialogue, and aims to reduce recidivism while preserving cultural identity and fostering community connections.
DIVERSION PROCESS AND VOLUNTEERING
Our program operates through a four-phase process aimed at promoting genuine accountability for the harm caused and helping individuals become productive members of the community. We use restorative practices, including Diversion Circles, to achieve this goal. Our Diversion Circles consist of volunteers, including community members, professionals, and knowledge keepers, who provide support to individuals in the community during the diversion circle as an alternative to traditional sentencing.
Please note that Diversion Circles may occur virtually on occasion, but preference is for in-person diversion circles. Diversion circles typically last 1-3 hours.
ROLE AND EXPECTATIONS:
• To support the restorative justice process by assisting in the diversion circles and ensuring the participants feel heard and understood.
• To support dialogue and encourage open and respectful communication between the parties involved.
• To aid in recommending Action Plan items and Action Plans during diversion outlining specific actions, responsibilities, and commitments to repair the harm and prevent future harm.
• To offer cultural competency and sensitivity and ensure that Action Plans are culturally relevant.
• To recommend community resources and support services for participants to address their needs.
• Attend training and development opportunities to enhance their understanding of restorative justice principles and effective communication techniques.
• To advocate for the MNO’s community diversion program, emphasizing the importance of healing and accountability over punitive measures.
• To provide program coordinators and staff feedback on the effectiveness and areas for improvement of the diversion process, contributing to program enhancement.
How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?

Additionally, volunteers will expand their network within the restorative justice field and receive training for this role, making a meaningful impact on individuals' lives and contributing to the enhancement of a program that prioritizes healing over punishment.
