Description

CPAWS Ottawa Valley has two active petition campaigns where we are collecting signatures on paper petitions calling on the federal government to take steps to grant better protection to Gatineau Park and the Greenbelt – neither of which are ‘parks’ under the sense of the law and both are at risk from development pressures among other threats. We are seeking commitments from local Members of Parliament to introduce legislation to protect both of these sites through standalone legislation or through amendments to the National Capital Act. To that end, we need to demonstrate broad public support for these measures. While an online petition is being rolled out, we find paper petitions to be very effective at fairs and events in the community as well as for canvassing at various locations. We are seeking volunteers who are confident and comfortable taking the petition around to events, but also to canvass on the street or even within a workplace (with permission) or on campus. We will provide training on the issues, how to approach people, and provide printed copies of the petition, clipboards and other material (stickers and postcards with more information). The petitions are bilingual. Our goal is to collect as many signatures as possible between October and late November when we expect to meet with local MPs to discuss the issue. This role does not involve any fundraising.

How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
This is a great way to earn volunteer hours for school or toward a resumé, the hours are flexible and no schedule needs to be followed. The volunteer work can be done virtually anywhere (with permission) and it is a nice way to meet people and to engage the public in the future of Gatineau Park and the Greenbelt, as most people assume they are protected as National or provincial parks, when in reality they have no protection under the law. This is also a great way to learn more about the legislative process in Canada and the role played by civil society organizations, like CPAWS, in shaping legislation and policy.
How will the organization benefit?
The organization will benefit by being able to demonstrate strong public support to decision-makers as a result of this volunteer support.
