Description

CPAWS-OV led the campaign to have western Quebec’s Dumoine, Noire and Coulonge rivers protected from industrial development over the last several years. We are now working with partners to improve campsites, trails and other facilities for both the benefit of visitors, but also to reduce impacts to benefit the environment. To that end, we have identified a need for more ‘thunderboxes’ at certain campsites and along certain segments of trail. Thunderboxes are essentially and outhouse without the building, it is a box with a lid, approximately 2’x2’x2′ over a large hole to help manage human waste and built of plywood for easy transportation into remote locations by canoe or on foot. We are looking for volunteers to build another 5 to 10 units for deployment in summer 2023. We can provide plans, but we cannot provide tools or a workspace. We have funding to reimburse the cost of materials. The project would involve building the boxes, if the volunteer is keen on staining or painting them, that would be welcome, but not necessary as we have stain and paint available to treat the boxes before installation.

How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
This is a hands-on project that can be carried out as a group, as a family or as part of an event, it is relatively easy to construct and can be completed in a couple of hours. It can be a fun project for families with children learning about basic carpentry and also sustainability. It is an active project and can help volunteers hone certain building skills.
How will the organization benefit?
The organization will benefit by being able to deploy these boxes as soon as spring conditions allow and they will help keep campsites clean and inviting for paddlers and hikers.
