Support Group Co-Facilitator Volunteer

Time Commitment: 2 hours every week on Fridays from 10am to noon OR 1-2 times a month at a specific location
*6 months minimum
*plus additional time communicating online with supervisor as needed
*attending online general orientation and training as needed
Supervisor: Dementia Care Coach
Location: One of three locations – Kanata, Ottawa Centre, and Orleans
Program Description:
The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County (DSORC) is currently seeking volunteers to help support our Dementia Care Coaches during our In-Person Support Group program – this program is held every Friday from 10am to noon. People living with dementia will be hosted with refreshments and activities in a separate room, while their care partners attends a support group in a separate space.
Primary Role and Responsibilities:
• Co-facilitate support group alongside a Dementia Care Coach
• Provide validation, reassurance, and guidance to caregivers
Qualifications and Skills:
• Extensive lived experience required (i.e. being a caregiver, or have supported people living with dementia)
• Patience and compassion when working with others who are cognitively impaired
• Professionalism and a positive disposition with excellent interpersonal skills
• Compassion, understanding and awareness of dementia
• Maintain a positive, supportive, and welcome environment learning
• Maintain confidentiality of all participants
• Reliability and punctuality
• Bilingualism in English and French is an asset but not required
