Description

While the birds don’t pay for the ride, they do appreciate it!

We are looking for volunteers to transport injured wild birds. You would pick-up contained wild birds and drive them between their injury site, our rehab in Orleans, the Wild Bird Care Center on Cedarview near Barrhaven, or other locations. Some routes are standard (our rehab to the WBCC and back), while others occur ad hoc when someone calls needing a bird picked-up or when a bird is released. Peak times are during the spring and fall migration, though we do also need drivers at other times of year.

Volunteers need to have their own car, insurance, and a valid drivers license, take a training course from Safe Wings and be willing to have safely transport injured birds in their car for short periods.

How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
As with Fletcher's Wildlife Garden, Safe Wings Ottawa is a committee of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club looking to help conserve our natural environment and its inhabitants. You could be part of the team making an impact on the lives and well-being of wild birds in the Ottawa area, get to know the city's streets and neighbourhoods a little better, and get to know the species of birds living and travelling through Ottawa. Additionally, you get to meet some of the kind and helpful people across Ottawa who care about birds! Its an easy role and you can take drives on at the frequency of your choice, but this small role has a BIG impact within our organization!
How will the organization benefit?
We can always use more drivers! Ottawa has a lot of birds and glass, but we also help with orphaned birds, those hurt by a cat or a car, and more. Having drivers who can transport the birds frees up our rehabber to concentrate on the birds’ recovery, allows our building monitors to check for window collisions, and more. We'd love to have you as part of our team! Apply online: https://app.betterimpact.com/PublicOrganization/b9e10391-4fe8-4ce5-b0bd-c39632a5cc91/1
Volunteer location:
Across Ottawa; our rehab is located on Canotek Road in the Industrial Park
