Tool Wizard at the Ottawa Tool Library
Description
The Ottawa Tool Library (OTL) is a non-profit tool lending library in Ottawa located near Carling Ave and the 417. We offer four categories of tools: hand tools, power tools, lawn and garden tools, and kitchen tools. Additionally, we offer a supervised and fully-equipped WorkSpace where members who have completed mandatory safety training can rent bench time to work on projects. We are entirely volunteer-driven, and are always looking for community-minded individuals to lend their talents, time, and energy to the cause.
Tool Wizards (time commitment 4-8 hours a month) are needed to be on hand when our Library is open. In the Library, our Tool Wizards advise members in choosing the right tools for the job, as well as in their proper and safe use.
Successful Tool Wizards will have the following qualifications:
* Be friendly, outgoing, and comfortable in engaging with our enthusiastic members;
* Be open and accepting of cultural and individual diversity, in both our membership and our volunteers.
* Be comfortable in advising members on their projects – tools, materials, and techniques – and in admitting lack of knowledge if necessary.
If you’d like to contribute your time and expertise to the fastest growing constructive community in Ottawa, please let us know!
Please note that the Ottawa Tool Library has adopted a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for its volunteers. All volunteers will be required to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination.
How will the organization benefit?
As a non-profit social enterprise, the Ottawa Tool Library (OTL) relies on contributions from a range of talented individuals to fulfill its mission of providing access to tools and skills throughout the local community. Volunteers are essential to permit the OTL to lend tools to its membership at minimal cost, permitting access to a broad range of tools. Our emphasis on access over ownership means more people use fewer tools and those tools used are often diverted from basements and landfills. Our members develop and exchange skills, exercise their creativity, and build themselves a more sustainable environment and community. Our volunteers apply what they know in maintaining our space and inventory, share their knowledge through workshops and mentoring, and connect and build networks throughout Ottawa's diverse maker communities. The OTL could never achieve its aims without the support of our many generous, dedicated and talented volunteers.
