Virtual Phone Help Line Team with Safe Wings Ottawa
Description
Want to volunteer from home or the cottage? We, and Ottawa’s birds, could really use your help!
We are looking for volunteers to staff our “HELP” line. First and foremost, you would be a public facing contact point for Safe Wings Ottawa, responding to phone calls and emails from the public looking for advice on orphaned, injured, or other birds in distress across Ottawa. Our phone team helps determine if a bird requires rescuing, and if so, assists the caller in how to capture and transport the bird to rehab or arranges for transportation if the caller is unable to drive.
Our phone is answered 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Calls are forwarded to our volunteers’ cell phones – so you can volunteer virtually from your sofa or the cottage – with training and support provided. We are looking for volunteers with basic computer skills to take on one or more shifts per week of either 2 or 4 hours in length and we ask that you commit to a period of at least 6 months.
Peak times are during the spring and fall migration with a much lower volume of calls through the rest of the year.
How will this opportunity benefit the volunteer?
As with Fletcher's Wildlife Garden, Safe Wings Ottawa is a committee of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club looking to help conserve our natural environment and its inhabitants. You could be part of the team making an impact on the lives and well-being of wild birds in the Ottawa area, problem solve with people in stressful situations trying to save birds, large and small (turkeys to hummingbirds!). This role has a BIG impact within our organization!

How will the organization benefit?
We can always use more members on the phone team! Ottawa has a lot of birds and glass, but we also help with orphaned birds, those hurt by a cat or a car, and more. The City of Ottawa transfers calls to Safe Wings as well, keeping us busy and popular. We also help a lot of people identify baby Robins and other fledglings who just need to be left safely on the ground in the care of their parents. We'd love to have you as part of our team!
